Dive Charters
The coastal area outside Akaroa Harbour has some of the most interesting and varied diving territory and species.
Being of a volcanic nature this provides a rocky bottom with lots of holes and caves to provide protection and homes for the many sub aquatic species.
Most diving is in the 10 to 20m range. Visibility can be a problem if a southerly has been on the prowl but in settled weather it can get up to 15m. The common range is 5 to 8m so this gives you the chance to get up close and personal.
Scuba diving
Because of the nature of the bottom and the weather there is a huge population of crayfish, moki and butterfish. So, bring your tanks, bring your spear gun and if you have an underwater camera it is well worth taking with you. Although you are required to supply your own gear, there are several stores in Christchurch that can provide hire equipment.
Suitable for certified divers. Bring your dive buddy and have a great day in the water.
Snorkelling
As with the diving you can access the same fish species while snorkeling but at a lesser depth range. If there are no tanks on board then you can also access paua, New Zealand Black Abalone.
Once again hire equipment is available in Christchurch if you do not have your own gear.
Most divers choose the 1/2 day charter: up to 4 hrs. Minimum 2 divers.
