…until next season. It was a great 2011-2012 Cruise Ship season for Akaroa and Christchurch. The town enjoyed hosting the ships’ passengers and staff and seeing the big cruise liners in our beautiful Akaroa Harbour.

Guess the fish…

Do you know what this species of fish might be? We caught our fourth one today, 5 February, 2012… we hadn’t seen one before last winter.

Dr. Clive Roberts, Curator of Fishes at Te Papa, confirmed that it is a Maori Chief, Notothenia angustata (family Nototheniidae).

He explained that “The family is most abundant in Antarctic seas, extending northwards into southern waters of Australia, NZ, and South America. This species is one of four which occur in our South Island waters.”

“The Maori chief is a bottom dwelling species found on reefs and in association with algal beds. The common name is derived from the pattern of spots and lines on the head that resemble tattoos. This cryptic coloration blends perfectly with the algae. A very sluggish swimmer, it is an ambush predator.”

A Cambodian Feast in Akaroa

As the line is wound in, there is always the excitement of “what have I caught”? This time, one of our guests from Cambodia reeled in a nice salmon! The couple were delighted since salmon is a real delicacy in Cambodia and they knew just how to cook it back at their campsite at Akaroa Holiday Park.

Welcome Little Lucas!

Rob and Beth wish to announce the birth of their first child, a son named Lucas, on 4 March 2011. He was born at Christchurch Women’s Hospital and weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces. Daddy can’t wait til Lucas is old enough to go fishin’!

Ewan Sargent, Features Editor of the Christchurch paper “The Press”, wrote an article in today’s paper (21/03/11) about his experience fishing with us earlier this summer. There is a photo of one of our groups of guests on the front of the Escape section and the article is found within that section as well. Our skipper, Rob, had a great time taking Ewan out in Tinbum as well as the other guests including a grad student from Wellington doing research on the blue cod distribution around NZ. It is nice to see a positive story about beautiful Akaroa ~ Come for a visit and see for yourself…
