<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: small;">He explained that &#8220;The family is most abundant in Antarctic seas, extending northwards into southern waters of Australia, NZ, and South America. This species is one of four which occur in our South Island waters.&#8221;</span></span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size: x-small;">&#8220;The Maori chief is a bottom dwelling species found on reefs  and in association with algal beds. The common name is derived from the  pattern of spots and lines on the head that resemble tattoos. This  cryptic coloration blends perfectly with the algae. A very sluggish  swimmer, it is an ambush predator.&#8221;</span></strong></p>
